About Eerie Lethbridge Post Office
Lethbridge’s old Post Office holds more stories than its familiar name suggests. Over the years, it housed everything from Customs and Immigration offices to the National Film Board and an RCAF recruiting office. Alongside that busy working history are accounts of curious happenings that former staff could never quite explain.
In this recording, the Lethbridge Historical Society’s narrator recalls collecting stories from employees as the Customs and Immigration offices prepared to leave. Several described a strange light near the fourth-floor elevator. Despite attempts to trace it, they said its source remained a mystery. Others recalled objects being moved and turning up in unexpected places.
The narration then introduces Ernest Stanley, a stonecutter who worked on the building during its construction in 1913. After a fall while finishing his work one day, Stanley died from his injuries at the Galt Hospital. His craftsmanship also extended beyond the Post Office: in his spare time, he carved the stone font at St. Cyprian’s Church.
Could the strange occurrences have any connection to the craftsman? The narrator raises the possibility, but no link is established between Stanley and the reported light or misplaced objects.
As you take in the building’s stonework, consider the skilled hands that helped create it—and the unexplained stories that became part of its history. Some mysteries, it seems, come without a forwarding address.
