About High Level Bridge Ghost Story
Stretching across the Oldman River valley, the High Level Bridge is an unforgettable part of Lethbridge's skyline. Completed in 1909 and spanning approximately 1.6 kilometres, this railway landmark has captured imaginations for generations — including through a ghost story told in the moonlight. In this recording, the Lethbridge Historical Society shares a local legend about a young boy who accepted a dare to ride his bicycle across the bridge.
According to the tale, he fell before reaching the other side, and neither he nor his bicycle was ever found. But the story doesn't end there. On nights when the moon is full, the legend says a ghostly cyclist can be seen attempting that unfinished journey. Before he can complete the crossing, he disappears, fading into the moonlight.
The recording places this folklore alongside an account of lives lost during the bridge's construction and subsequent history. The boy's ride is presented as a ghost story, rather than a verified historical event. From a public viewpoint in the river valley, look up at the bridge's towering steelwork and listen to a tale that gives this familiar landmark a mysterious second life. Enjoy the view from public paths and viewing areas; the railway bridge is not a pedestrian crossing.
