Aeolian Aviary
Catherine Ross & Denton Fredrickson, 2011
Originally just an idea quickly jotted on a paper napkin, this piece was commissioned by the City of Lethbridge to help commemorate the grand reopening of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and its newly renovated spaces in 2011. This sculptural sound installation combines the acoustic resonance of wind and light-sensitive string instrumentation with the dynamic and vibrant movements of a flock of 67 aluminum-cast birds. The installation serves as a reminder to all how intertwined the light, temperature, and everything in-between in nature is connected back to our art, our heritage, and the heart of our city.
